Matthew Derr becomes the 11th president
of Sterling College.
Sterling College is the first college in Vermont,
& the third college in the U.S., to divest its
endowment from fossil fuel extractors.

Matthew participates in the 50th annual Winter
Expedition; one of many he completed.
The Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture
& Food Systems is founded.

Education (NECHE).

The first cohort of the Wendell Berry Farming
Program of Sterling College begins.
Sterling adopts a ten-year strategic initiative.

Sterling celebrates its 60th year with an alumnx
reunion weekend kick-off & announcement of
a formal partnership with The Berry Center in
Kentucky to create the Wendell Berry Farming
Program of Sterling College.
Eleven solar trackers are installed on campus,
giving the College the ability to produce 80% of its
electricity needs.
The School of the New American Farmstead launches,
offering continuing education for aspiring agrarians
& artisan food makers.

of Arts programming.
Sterling College is one of the first in higher
education to declare a climate emergency &
names the forces causing the climate emergency,
and pledges its focus on programs that advance
ecological thinking and action.
Sterling assumes management of a new
instructional land unit at The Farm Between
in Jeffersonville, Vermont.
EcoGather™ moves Sterling into the distancelearning arena with the first higher education
platform of its kind designed to advance ecological
thinking & action as a foundation for building
regenerative communities.
The Behrend Admissions Center is
completed & the Nourish the Roots
comprehensive campaign goes public.
2018
Sterling College announced the successful completion
of the Nourish the Roots comprehensive campaign by
exceeding the original $9 million campaign goal, raising
$11.6 million in gifts & pledges.
Sterling’s 60th-year celebration culminated with a
Sterling School Reunion, which included a ribbon cutting
for the newly renovated 1958 Room, formerly Simpson 3.
Sterling College is awarded a grant from the Peter Alfond
Foundation to make possible the Peter Alfond Wellness
Center which will begin construction in 2022.
Sterling is awarded a grant to renovate the Simpson
Hall science lab & establish the Robert B. Annis Center
for Ecology.
Sterling is gifted the former IA building from the
Craftsbury Academy to replace the historic use
of Paradise Hall as a woodworking studio.
2021
Sterling graduates the first cohort of
12 students from the Wendell Berry
Farming Program.
The College enters into Memorandums of
Agreement with five partner communities
(Puerto Rico, Bhutan, Colorado, Vermont,
& India) for its EcoGather™ initiative & the
microsite was launched.
Refreshed identity is launched.
Sterling’s first Diversity & Inclusion
Fellow begins her work in collaboration
with College of the Atlantic.
The Robert B. Annis Center for Ecology
is completed.
